Tibetan Sutra Prayer Book Cover - 17th Century Origin - Turkmenisten A Rare Painted Carved TeakThis antique 1th century book cover is a Tibetan sutra cover and carved from a single piece of wood. The central panel is slightly raised framing eight Tibetan auspicious symbols. From left to right, the parasol, golden fishes, conch, lotus, the treasure vase, endless knot, the victory banner, & the Wheel of Dharma. Each symbol has its own meaning and as a composite, they bring good fortune. Wood was scarce in Tibet and a highly valued commodity.
